Gscanbus - an IEEE1394 testing and visualization tool for Linux

gscanbus

gscanbus is a little bus scanning, testing and topology visualizing tool for the Linux IEEE1394 subsystem, with some AV/C support, especially for controlling Camcorders and VCRs. It is intended as a debugging tool for IEEE1394 development, but can also be used to simply check your IEEE1394 setup on Linux.

Here is a screenshot of my Linux desktop running dev1394 and gscanbus-0.4, controlling a DV VCR and a DV camcorder. Also connected to the bus is a Windows PC with an adaptec IEEE1394 controller, as well as an PC/104Plus embedded PC with a PC/104Plus IEEE1394 board. You can see the PC/104Plus in the live picture from the camcorder in the upper right corner. Please click on the picture to enlarge.

Prerequisites

Obviously a working IEEE1394 subsystem. For gscanbus 0.7 and higher The version included with Linux kernel 2.4.4 and above works fine (I use 2.4.19 currently). Other versions might work as well, but this is untested. If you experience problems you are always encouraged to try out the latest version of the Linux 1394 subsystem before reporting bugs to me.
libraw1394 0.9 or at least a CVS version of libraw1394 from late January 2001 or newer.
Both can be downloaded from the Linux 1394 project homepage.
Older versions may require an older IEEE1394 subsystem and definitely require an older libraw1394. libraw1394 0.8.2 should be considered the most recent one for gscanbus 0.7-pre2 and before. I have not checked very old versions of gscanbus recently, so this is unsupported.

gscanbus is only distributed in sourcecode form. The current version should always work with the current IEEE1394 subsystem release or CVS version. The older versions are provided in case you still run an older version of the IEEE1394 subsystem. However, upgrading is strongly encouraged.
